5th Class Chocolate Projects
During the past couple of weeks we have been doing a project
on chocolate. We were learning about cocoa in geography and so, decided to do a
project based on the topic to learn a little more.
My project was on Fairtrade which is basically an
organisation that makes sure farmers get a fair price for their produce whether
it is chocolate, bananas or whatever they are selling. Fairtrade also helps
free young children from child labour by making sure their families get paid
fairly so that the children don’t have to work.
Another project by Micheál Doyle was on cocoa farmers. He discovered cocoa farms are mainly found in
Africa. The conditions needed for cocoa
to grow are rain, heat and shade which is why cocoa grows mainly in
rainforests. Other pupils in our class
did projects based around how cocoa is grown and famous chocolate companies.
We also learnt some interesting facts about chocolate. One chocolate chip will give you enough
energy to walk 10 yards. There are 30-50
beans in a cocoa pod and there are 25-40 pods in a single tree. Most cocoa grows in Ghana and the Ivory
Coast. The average age of a cocoa farmer is 50. The amount of cocoa farmers in
the world is decreasing because young people don’t want to remain in the
profession as the pay is insufficient for the work involved.
We learned a lot about chocolate while doing our projects
and we even managed to persuade the principal to let us have chocolate for all
our hard work.
